Information for Parents of 4th 5th & 6th in Breaffy NS for Youth Academy applications in NUIG Galway.
The Youth Academy at NUIG Galway works with high ability 4th , 5th & 6th class children in Maths and English to support their learning and academic development. You will be notified by text if your child is eligible. The Youth Academy will be running two separate week long summer camps in July.

Week 1 Monday 8th July- Friday 12th July Time 9.30-1 pm
- Exploring Electronics: Learn how to build circuits and robots
- Your Radio: Analysing Media and Making Your Own Show
- A fun introduction to Computer Programming, The Internet, and Multimedia
- What makes a Play a Play
- CSI: How Science Solves Crime Scenes
- Making and playing your own fun and adventurous video game
Week 2 Monday 15th July- Friday 19th July Time 9.30-1 pm
- Exploring Electronics: Learn how to build circuits and robots
- A fun introduction to Computer Programming, The Internet and Multimedia
- What makes a Play a Play
- CSI: How Science Solves Crime Scenes
A celebration ceremony will take place on Friday 19th June at 1.30 pm. Students from both weeks will be invited to attend and awarded certificates for participation.
Who Can Apply ?
The Youth Academy is aimed at 4th, 5th and 6th class primary school students.
- Students wishing to participate must demonstrate high academic ability and be in the top 5%, or 95th percentile, (STEN 9 or 10) based on standardised tests carried out annually in primary schools (Drumcondra, SIGMA-T or MICRA-T).
- If your child is in 3rd class and going into 4th class in September 2019 they are noteligible to apply.
- If your child is in 6th class and going into 1st year in September 2019 they areeligible to apply
Fee.
- A fee of €120.00 per student applies for the week long summer camp.
If you are successful in your application you will be contacted regarding fee payment afterwards. Due to popular demand and limited number of places, not all applicants will receive a place. Applications are offered on a first come first served basis. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis so it is advisable to book early.
If you are successful in your application text Breaffy NS 087 62485489 and our school may in confidence and discretely be able to give some financial assistance towards fee/costs using criteria similar to book grant application.
Scholarships
We have a limited number of scholarships, based on economic circumstance, available for students to attend the Youth Academy free of charge.
If you have a medial card you are eligible to apply for a scholarship. Please apply via the online application form by entering your medical card details. Not all who apply for a scholarship will be successful. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis so it is advisable to book early.
What you need to apply?
You need to send proof of your child’s test results to support their application. Test results need to be emailed to youthacademy@nuigalway.ie after you have completed the online application form. The form will be available on Youth Academy website tomorrow Wednesday 12 June from 11 am.
Eligibility to attend our summer camps is based on your child’s most recent test result. If results from 2019 are not back before the closing date you can use last years results (2018).
If the results are stated on their school report card you can:
1. Scan, ensuring their name and result are clearly visible, and email a copy to youthacademy@nuigalway.ie
2. Take a photograph, ensuring their name and test result are clearly visible, and email it to youthacademy@nuigalway.ie
3. Photocopy, making sure to include your child’s name as stated on the application, and post to Geraldine Marley, Youth Academy, NUI Galway, Galway
If results are not stated on their school report card:
Ask your school to give you something on headed paper stating your childs name and result and either scan or post as above. Breaffy Parents interested can text 087 6248549 to collect a statement of your child’s results tomorrow morning to apply at 11 am tomorrow when applications become live.
When to Apply? Tomorrow, Wednesday 12 June after 11 noon with scanned copy of results collected from office as our school reports are not due until Monday June 17th .
- Applications for the summer camp will open on Wednesday 12th June at 11am. An application form will be available on Youth Academy website at that time.
- PLACES ARE VERY LIMITED and booked up within 3 hours of opening last year.
