Physical Education in Breaffy National School
In Breaffy N.S., we feel that Physical Education is a very important part of our curriculum, as it contributes to the overall well balanced, harmonious development of our children. Through participation in a diverse range of sporting activities, the general health and wellbeing of our children is enhanced, and each child can experience the joy of physical exertion while developing skills and attitudes that foster positive self esteem.
Our focus at all times is on the child’s holistic development. Whilst our school has competed very successfully at local area, county, provincial and even national level in various sports, the emphasis in Breaffy N.S. is always on participation, enjoyment and fun, rather than winning at all costs.
All classes participate in their normal P.E. lessons each week, and we are often lucky enough to have visiting coaches from various sporting bodies who share their skills with our children. Parents also help out with P.E. lessons occasionally. We are fortunate to have wonderful facilities, including a large hall, an Astroturf pitch and the use of our local G.A.A. pitch nearby. Most important of all we have a staff with wonderful enthusiasm for sport and a high degree of expertise in many sporting areas.
Past pupils have gone on to represent our parish, our county and even our country in a number of sports. We are very proud of them all.
The sports we cater for in our school include Gaelic Football (after school training on Tuesdays), Soccer, Swimming (lessons provided for Third & Fourth classes during school time and optional lessons available for children after school), Rounders, Athletics, Hurling, Rugby, Tennis (Lessons in Castlebar Tennis Club for Senior Classes), Darts, Golf (Lessons in Castlebar Driving Range), Basketball, Spikeball (in conjunction with local Secondary Schools), Dance (Céilí Dances taught for Seachtain na Gaeilge Céilí), Walking( Daily Mile Programme) and Gymnastics.
Ours Sports Day each June and our Active School week are hugely successful events in our school calendar.
